GASVESSEL’s coordinator is Loris Cok, director of Navalprogetti. In this interview, Loris gives his vision on why he started the project and what he expects from the project to happen.
Why did you decide to take part in and lead the Gasvessel project?
Together with CNGV, Navalprogetti has evaluated for long time the waterborne transportation of the natural gas in compressed status. We decided to take part together with CNGV to the H2020 project as promoters, in this supported by DOW and PNO. Seen the role of Navalprogetti, after the acknowledgement received by the EU, it was natural for us to take on the role of Coordinator.
Where do you see your organization after the Gasvessel project is finished?
Navalprogetti has been on marine engineering and naval architecture since 1975, and it has a lot of experience in the field of ship, industrial and mechanical design as well. On Gasvessel project completion, after the achievement of all the studies for the creation of the CNG cylinders, Navalprogetti will be involved hopefully in the design of CNG ships for many customers interested in this trade.
What is the most challenging aspect for you in the Gasvessel project?
The most challenging aspect of this project will be the design and the testing of the cylinders and the design of CNG ship. It will be a great challenge to design a ship that can transport, load and unload compressed natural gas at a superior level of safety, higher than LNG ships. Our target is to design a totally environment friendly ship with a safety level such to prevent any possible citizen and authorities’ concern while approaching loading/unloading locations or ports.
What would you like to tell someone about the Gasvessel project that has no connection to the oil and gas or shipping industries?
We could say that this type of sea transportation will increase the energy availability in Europe with more flexibility for the supply operations. This new type of transportation will simplify the gas procurement frame requiring fewer investments and granting easier coverage of the demand.
Finally yet importantly, the very goal of investing in the Gasvessel means to move forward to the Energy independence of Europe, thus reducing the need of buying Energy from other countries.
